Second, the inconsistent muzzle velocity of the 6.5″ revolver from one round to the next could also have contributed to more flyers. So, even though I was shooting from a rest, those flyers experienced with the 6.5″ could have very well been my error. First, with a longer barrel comes a longer sight radius. I attribute this to two potential factors. However, I did experience more flyers with the 6.5″ revolver. The group sizes were around 2″ if you discount flyers. The 6 shot groups, fired at a range of 50 feet, yielded similar results in both the 16″ and 6.5″ Heritage Rough Rider revolvers.
This was not too surprising but interestingly enough, the deviation in velocity across the 6 round shot groups through the 16″ barrel, was considerably lower, more consistent, than with 6.5″ barrel as well. The muzzle velocity test revealed that the longer barrel revolver averaged muzzle velocities around 100 feet per second higher than the shorter barrel. These tests covered both muzzle velocity and accuracy in comparison to a 6.5″ revolver of the exact same make. I performed several tests with this 16″ revolver. Testing The Heritage Rough Rider Revolver It has exactly the same frame, hammer, loading gate, grips, safety, cylinder, ejector, etc as all the other shorter Rough Rider models. If you are all familiar with the rimfire line of revolvers from Heritage then you will be totally familiar with the 16″ Rough Rider. So my thoughts quickly turned from the pure aesthetic to that of how it might compare to my more traditional 6.5″ Heritage revolver. After that excitement wore off, one word kept coming to mind, novelty. It is kind of hard to NOT get excited about a revolver with a 16″ barrel.
